Should you choose Kensington Expert or Kensington Orbit? Both of these two trackball mice are very popular for office uses. Kensington Expert is more expensive, but it comes with a larger track ball that offers better, more accurate navigation. It also comes with more buttons. On the other hand, Kensington Orbit is quite more affordable and the scroll ring does feel better. Continue reading below for the detailed comparisons between Kensington Expert Mouse vs Orbit!
Design and Size
Kensington Expert comes with a classy look. It has a shiny dark gray body with a rectangular shape. Compared to the Orbit, it is a little bit larger and wider due to accommodating a bigger track ball and more buttons. Make sure that you have enough space on your desk for the mouse, especially if you want to use the detachable wrist rest pad as well.
On the other hand, Kensington Orbit has a more compact design. It also has a detachable wrist rest pad. The smaller size may make it easier to fit on a narrow desk. However, this model does lack the classy look of the Expert. It has a simple black body with a blue track ball.
Kensington Expert comes with a 55mm track ball, a scroll ring, and four programmable buttons. You can use the TrackballWorks software to customize the four buttons and also to adjust the cursor speed. The software is easy and intuitive to use.
If you often need to work with macros, you will benefit greatly from Kensington Expert’s four buttons. The placement of the buttons is very good. They are all easily accessible by your fingers. Having four instead of two programmable buttons can be very useful for some works. However, they make little value if you rarely need to use programmable buttons and macros in the first place.
On the other hand, Kensington Orbit comes with a 40mm track ball, a scroll ring, and two programmable buttons. You also use the TrackballWorks software to customize the buttons and cursor speed. Having only two buttons may be too limiting if you often work with macros. In addition, the placement of the buttons is not very good. They are difficult to access.
So, how is the performance of Kensington Expert Mouse vs Orbit? The wider track ball of the Expert does feel better. It allows you to navigate over a large area more easily. In addition, it is also more accurate, thanks to the Diamond Eye optical tracking technology.
However, the scroll ring is not as impressive. It feels clunky and not accurate. According to some users, you can remove the magnet underneath the scroll ring to improve the performance.
On the other hand, Kensington Orbit’s track ball does feel good and usable, but it is not as great as the Expert’s. It is somewhat less accurate. Even so, the Orbit’s scroll ring is very good.
