Computers are a very common equipment and we are sure many of us are using them on a daily basis or where you have to do the work on. Even for students, the function of computers is crucial in learning and communicating so it is not surprising to see the rising options for their peripheral as well. Just like how gaming keyboards and mice are introduced to aid gamers in being more comfortable with their setup, we the no-gamers are also offered with a vertical mouse for typical application.
Vertical or ergonomic mice are not as mainstream as gaming mice, probably because they are a bit strange-looking for most people. But, they are not only designed to be niche products since there are real benefits of using this type of mouse, especially if you are uncomfortable or find the regular mouse causing some problems like pain on the wrist. Here are some benefits you can enjoy from using a larger vertical mouse as the daily driver.
They don’t twist your wrist like the standard computer mouse or even typical gaming mouse since with the flat shape, they make you have to force the wrist pronation and stress on tendons which in repetitive events may cause stress or even long-term damage. To put it simply, human’s hands are not evolved to hold the traditional mouse. If using a vertical mouse, our hand is positioned naturally just like when you are doing handshake or angled to a certain degree, removing the stress and possible pain.
They use less grip than the typical flat mouse so we don’t have to apply as much pressure or energy in holding and moving the mouse around. With less grip, we are releasing the tension on our tendons of the wrist and this will also remove the fatigue along with less chance of aggravation over time. Due to the design of these mice, the energy from hand and wrist tendons are moved to the larger muscle on our upper arms.
Easing some existing pain is another reason why some people are moving to vertical mice, especially if you are the type who is using a computer for almost every day of the week. Over time the stress may accumulate and while wrist pain is not something we usually pay attention to, they can be distracting as well when you need to be productive. Using an ergonomic mouse will help alleviate the pain by correcting improper mouse-holding techniques.

About Logitech MX Ergo and MX Vertical
While not as popular as regular mouse, vertical or ergonomic mouse are available from plenty of manufacturers which is great because the options are not as little as what we expect it to be. The more people use computers whether it is for productivity or for entertainment, the problems regarding the mouse may become more prevalent and this is why you can find a good range of options in the market. Most popular brands usually have at least one of this type of mouse.
When talking about computer’s peripheral, there are few names that come to mind and one of them is Logitech. We do think this brand is just the most convenient option to go for when shopping for a new mouse or keyboard since we have used some of their office mice as well which all are working properly, well until they are old enough to be replaced of course. They carry a lot of options ranging from common mice like Logitech M525 Vs M545, gaming mouse such as Logitech G600, and niche alternatives like vertical mouse, all seem promising to rely on.
For those who are experiencing some pain on their wrist or want to try a vertical mouse and see whether they feel better or not, there are Logitech MX Ergo and MX Vertical to consider. These mice are called as ergonomic but they are not exactly the same, in fact the designs are pretty much different from each other and in comparison the Ergo is probably more similar to the typical mice we are already used to but the mouse is no longer need to be moved around in order to move the cursor.
On the other hand your MX Vertical is similar to a regular mouse in terms of it needs to be moved on a surface for the sensor to track movement . The Logitech MX Ergo and MX Vertical are more of an office mouse and they are probably not as fast, if you are not used to the mechanism yet, especially the MX Ergo since the unit is still. Comparing the two we do think it is more about personal preference and if you prefer the most natural, the MX Vertical will be the better option.
Logitech MX Ergo and MX Vertical Design
Before we see what the two can offer, let’s start from the unit first and these are large mice which is not surprising considering how they are supposed to be used. The MX Ergo is measured at 133mm long from the tip to bottom at the furthest side and about 60mm tall from the bottom. The width on the largest part is 100mm but the grip itself is 62mm while the angle for our hand when holding the mouse is at 20 degree from the base.
In comparison the MX Vertical is not as long as the MX Ergo but due to the design of the mouse it will be taller at 79mm with a length of 120mm and widest width at 78mm. The grip itself is very narrow so your hand will end up like holding a typical joystick but with a sharper angle at 57 degree. They are not compact but have superb build quality and the two are actually wireless mice with rechargeable battery.
Logitech MX Ergo and MX Vertical Sensor
Now moving further, let’s see what Logitech MX Ergo and MX Vertical can offer starting with the sensor. The two are featured with optical sensors but, the difference is you have to move the Vertical mouse across the surface so it is probably wiser to use a mouse pad, especially if you have a glass table but if not, wooden tables have no issue registering the sensor. The MX Ergo on the other hand doesn’t need any fabric below since the cursor is navigated using the trackball located at the top of the mouse.
This alone can reduce the strain on our wrist since now we don’t have to do a lot of movement but, what’s concerning is MX Ergo only comes with low DPI/CPI sensor which is from 320 to 440 only while the MX Vertical is tracking up to 4,000 DPI/CPI.
Logitech MX Ergo and MX Vertical Comfort
Next we want to focus on the experience with the Logitech MX Ergo and MX Vertical because they are quite different. For us who are not used to tracking through trackball, it needs more time to stop moving the mouse as we need to navigate the cursor. We find our hand accidentally trying to move the unit as if it is with a regular mouse. In addition, tracking using this ball is more difficult than what we imagine since rubbing this trackball requires a higher patience to stop or move where we want the cursor to be.
On the other hand the MX Vertical is probably more familiar to us and we don’t need much time to adapt since the feeling itself is almost like holding a joystick but with a lower angle. The only problem is probably getting used to the sensor placement, depending on where it used to be in your previous mouse.
Logitech MX Ergo and MX Vertical Features
Lastly we want to talk about the features you can find on these Logitech MX Ergo and MX Vertical. As it has been mentioned above, the MX Ergo has a certain angle from the base of the mouse and this is adjustable for up to 30 degree to the right. In comparison the MX Ergo also has more buttons, a total of 9 buttons with 6 of them programmable while the latter has 7 buttons in which 4 are programmable. You can assign functions to these buttons through the software provided by Logitech; the Logitech Options.
Logitech MX Ergo vs MX Vertical
These mice are great for your typical computer application but they are not suitable for gaming purposes. The differences are mainly on how you will use the mice because MX Ergo tracks using the ball so we don’t need to move the actual mouse around to navigate the cursor like the MX Vertical. Personally we are more comfortable with MX Vertical as it feels more natural and easier to get used to but, the MX Ergo does eliminate movement for reduced fatigue as well as more buttons to program.

- RECHARGEABLE BATTERY - With quick charging: Stays powered for 4 months on a full charge – and get 3 hours of use from a 1-minute quick charge (Battery life may vary based on user and computing conditions)
You can go well with any of them based on which seems to fit on your hand or personal preference the most but we do think most people will be more comfortable or familiar with MX Vertical in comparison and personally we also like the higher angle which helps the wrist in a handshake position.
